Cucumber diet, know whether this really works in weight loss !


Cucumber diet is gaining popularity nowadays as a short term diet that promise quick weight loss. This diet has several variations in it, but the most claimed one can lose up to 7 kgs in one or two weeks. In fact some professionals claim this diet with tagline “7 kgs in 7 days”. This that basically consists of cucumber and its various recipes along with few protein rich foods such as eggs, chicken, fish and nuts. Cucumber diet recommends replacing regular meals with cucumber or it’s recipes. This clearly means that even fruits and other vegetables should be keep apart. Just because, this diet lacks variety of important nutrients. So it is not advisable for using it longer than 14 days.

• Do cucumber diet really works for fat loss?

Till now there are no such researches or studies available that analyse the cucumber diet specifically. However, the main reason to expect fat loss is amount of very less calories one intakes during this diet. However The weight loss will occur only for 14 days till the date you follow this diet. There are higher risk of gaining that lose weight when you come to your normal diet.

During a study, it was found that low calorie diet of less than 800 calories per day should not be recommended for long term weight loss programme. The more restrictive diet is, it becomes more difficult for participants to follow.

The thing to keep in mind is you have to use only a limited amount of cucumbers. Because consuming an endless amount of cucumbers can add up you in the calories. Although a 300 grams serving of cucumbers contain only 45 calories. Addition to this, cucumber also provide some small amounts of nutrition, such as Potassium, vitamin C and vitamin K.

It is a fact and scientifically proven that most of the people regained the lost weight as they come back to normal diet. Especially in those who do not know healthy eating patterns.

• Drawbacks of cucumber diet

One of the major and most focused drawback of cucumber diet is, it is very restrictive. This diet is nutritionally inadequate and also promotes negative eating behaviours. Researches and studies to reveal that restrictive dieting in form of disordered eating can have negative effects on the body.

Cucumber can provide you small amount of some beneficial nutrients when coupled with healthy diet. But alone cucumber are very low in calories and do not have any protein and fat content. Protein is very important for many functions of our body including metabolism and muscle maintenance. Similarly, fats also provide concentrated source of calories that provide energies to work and perform living processes.

Another reason is unsustainability of this diet. These types of diet are designed for a short term of 14 days, not more than that. Because typical cucumber diet provides only 800 calories. These are quite low and even life sustaining processes such as respiration and digestion will become imbalanced.

So it is advisable to follow healthy eating habits with slightly calorie deficiency combined with intense workout. If you want to lose weight and keep your body healthy too. Just keep these types of things that can malnourish your body aside.
