Brittle fingernails are one of the least common iron deficiency symptoms. This condition is also called koilonychias. The first sign of brittle nails is, they chip and crack easily. During later stages of iron deficiency spoon shaped nails can occur where the middle part of the nail dips and the edges are raised. This giving round spoon like appearance.

Just because it is a rare side effect an occurs only in 15% of the population. It is generally ignored.
